To celebrate national coworking day, we're looking back to look to the future. Bureau Workspaces began when a writer, a furniture designer and a management consultant walked into a cafe: We had nowhere else to meet. Now we’ve got a shared office and meeting space on the Terrace. And you can come too! Here’s how it all began...
The writer hated working from home. Who could have guessed that the cheapest, most convenient option could be so deeply unsatisfying?
The furniture designer was working from his workshop - which makes sense until you try to do your GST in a swirl of delivery boxes, sawdust and power tools.
The consultant had work/life separation, but when working from client sites, he'd sometimes get squeezed into makeshift nooks and crannies that weren't ideal for doing great work.
We were all living the future of work. We’d consciously uncoupled from conventional jobs and conventional workspaces. But freedom’s just another word for nowhere to sit. The future of work wasn’t quite working for us.
Working from home can make a nice change - but it’s not a great idea to make it into a habit. It’s isolating, and unhealthy. It makes routines difficult and interruptions a given. Seriously, how many times can you open the fridge in a day? For people who manage a busy business involving a shop floor or a kitchen, it’s great to have somewhere else to go to take care of the back end. For independent contractors, having your own workspace helps give you the independence that you went out on your own for.
Libraries and cafes are OK for short term tasks - but they’re cunningly designed to be small and bustling because they literally do not want you there all day. Meeting potential clients in bars and cafes isn’t always ideal.
These insights set cofounder Arthur Meek off on a round-the-world odyssey investigating the future of workspaces by looking at coworking operations in NZ, the UK and throughout the US.
What he found was that there's room for different kinds of coworking spaces for different people's needs, but that too many spaces are targeted at the same crowd. Young, loud and startup-y. Or corporate types trying to look young, loud and startup-y. Perfect for those who like that kind of thing. A non-starter for those who don't. There wasn't much around for people who wanted something simple, beautiful and efficient. Something that just works, so you can just get on with your work.
So Bureau was born. Beautiful, simple, comfortable and affordable.
